Considering Cosmetic Surgery? Tips for Preventing Bruises While Getting Cosmetic Injections & Dermal Fillers

Posted on

Like many people who find themselves aging, your face might no longer look the same as you've always been used to. If you find that wrinkles have taken hold and you want to smooth them out with different kinds of dermal fillers or cosmetic injections, that can be a great way to give your face a more youthful appearance. However, to be sure you don't accidentally do anything that will result in bruises or other facial marks, use these tips.

Pause Non-Essential Medications

If you're someone who takes various medications from time to time that aren't essential for a health condition, you may be asked to pause them for a time in the days immediately before and after the procedure. Many substances can the ability of your skin to start clotting so that it can heal properly; that will mean you're more likely to develop bruising in the areas where you were injected. Some examples of medications to stop include:

  • Vitamin E supplements
  • ibuprofen
  • aspirin
  • ginseng

Not all medication should be stopped; if you're on warfarin, a popular anti-clotting medication, it is essential that you keep taking it regardless of your cosmetic filler appointment. Discuss all your medications with both your primary doctor and your cosmetic dermatologist so you know what to continue and what to pause.

Skip Your Workout Afterwards

If you're someone who works out often, skipping a workout can be undesirable. If you're planning to get dermal fillers, however, you may need to cut back for a day or two while your skin is attempting recovery from the injections. Exercise boosts circulation of blood throughout the body, which is ordinarily desirable, but if you've got more blood than usual moving through the capillaries in your face, it is harder for those capillaries to heal well; bruising could happen. Give your skin a break and wait before jumping back into your vigorous routine.

Avoid Cocktails

It may seem bizarre than a drink or two would have anything to do with your dermal fillers, but the alcohol in your cocktails could slow platelet activity in the blood and therefore slow healing. Bruises could then form. Stick with juice, water and non-alcoholic beverages for a day or two before and after the fillers or injections.

The information here can serve as a guide for you as you prepare for and recover from the injections you receive. A cosmetic dermatology clinic will have dermatologists able to answer additional questions.
