3 Steps To Take Care Of Your Health After Skin Cancer Treatment

Posted on

After treatment for skin cancer, you still have to take steps to protect your skin and safeguard your overall health. Due to your previous diagnosis, you are at a higher risk of having skin cancer again in the future. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to lower your risk. Here are just a few.

Talk to Your Doctor About Future Care

One of the best ways you can lower your chances of developing cancer again is to discuss a care plan for the future with your doctor. The plan should include suggestions for follow up examinations and lifestyle changes you can make. The plan is tailored to your specific needs and medical condition.

In addition to this, the doctor can advise you of any side effects that you can experience over the long-term. He or she can also give you symptoms of a possible recurrence to look out for.

Practice Sun Safety

The medications you were given during your treatment can sometimes cause sun sensitivity. The sensitivity can make it likelier that you will experience a sunburn, which increases your chances of developing skin cancer again. To prevent this, you need to practice sun safety.

For instance, you need to be wary of being out in the sun when it is the strongest. If possible, limit your ventures outdoors to the early morning hours and late evening.  If you have to go outside, cover as much of your skin as possible. Long sleeves, a wide brimmed hat, and pants can help protect your skin.

Even if your skin is covered, you should consider wearing sunscreen. The sunscreen will provide protection against the ultraviolet rays that are able to get through the fabric of your clothing. Look for sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or ecamsule to get the most protection.

Take Proper Care of Your Skin

Once treatment is completed, your skin is still vulnerable to problems, such as dryness, blistering, and itching. In most instances, the problems are just a reaction to the treatment that can be easily avoided with the right skin care routine.

For instance, stick to mild soap and water when bathing. You also need to avoid using products that have alcohol, aluminum, or fragrances. All of these substances can be irritating to your healing skin. You also need to moisturizer to lower the chances of side effects.
